18 March 2025
On February 18, 2025, Community Technology Development Organisation (CTDO), Welthungerhilfe (WHH), and the Centre for Conflict Management and Transformation (CCMT) with the financial support of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) officially launched the Strengthening Rural Governance for the Right to Adequate Food (RtF) Project. The launch was held at Cresta Oasis Hotel in Harare. This initiative aims to enhance food security resilience in Zimbabwe by building the capacity of various stakeholders involved in food governance. The project is part of a broader multi-country initiative that is being implemented in Malawi, Kenya, and Ethiopia. The Zimbabwe consortium, represented by CTDO, WHH and CCMT, represents a collaborative effort to addressing food security challenges across the country. The launch garnered significant interest from the Government of Zimbabwe, particularly through the Ministry of Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development. The Ministry expressed its commitment to collaborating with non-governmental organizations to ensure the realization of Section 77 of the National Constitution which emphasizes the right to adequate food. The Keynote address was delivered by the Chief Director, Strategic Planning and Business Development in the Ministry of Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water, and Rural Development on behalf of the Permanent Secretary, Professor O. Jiri. He emphasized the importance of a collaborative approach to achieving the right to adequate food and water for everyone as enshrined in Section 77 of the Constitution of Zimbabwe. Other important speeches were given by the Executive Director of CTDO, Mr. Tonderai A. Mushita, and Matthias Spaeth, the Zimbabwe Country Director of Welthungerhilfe. Both speakers highlighted the opportunity this initiative presents in supporting government efforts to ensure the right to adequate food. This project reflects a concerted effort to improve food security and governance in rural areas through fostering partnerships between governmental and non-governmental organisations. The project will strengthen collaboration between government, civil society, and community leaders to advocate for food security, and improve understanding and accountability in achieving food and nutrition security in Zimbabwe between 2025 and March 2028.
